Did The Bishops Do The Right Thing?

In the aftermath of the visit by Pope Benedict XVI, a troublesome question is asked by traditional Catholics: Did American pro-choice politicians receiving Communion at the papal masses indicate a softening on the abortion question by the pope? The answer is "no." On the contrary, it reflected disobedience to Benedict by the archbishops of New York and Washington.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sens. John Kerry, Christopher Dodd and Edward M. Kennedy received Communion at Nationals Park in Washington, as did Rudolph Giuliani at Yankee Stadium in New York. They were present because they were invited to the masses by Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington and Cardinal Edward Egan, archbishop of New York. Given choice seats, they took Communion hosts as a matter of course.

Vatican sources say the pope has not retreated from his long-held position that pro-choice politicians should be deprived of Communion, but the decisions in Washington and New York were not his.

The effect was to dull messages of faith, obligation and compassion conveyed by Benedict. In his Yankee Stadium homily, he talked of "authority" and "obedience" - acknowledging that "these are not easy words to speak nowadays."

They surely are not for four ex-presidential candidates and two princes of the church, representing Catholics who defy their faith's doctrine on abortion.

As Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Benedict's position was unequivocal. Asked in 2004 whether presidential nominee Kerry should be allowed to take Communion, he replied, "The minister of Holy Communion must refuse to distribute it."

He has not altered his position. When as Benedict he arrived in Brazil a year ago, he declared: "The killing of an innocent human child is incompatible with going into Communion in the body of Christ."

Benedict did not reiterate that position in Washington and New York, because a pope traveling abroad is influenced by the stance of local church authorities - and American bishops are divided. (St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke leads those who believe pro-choice politicians can't receive Communion.)

Wuerl is averse to colliding with powerful laymen. He could have avoided any confrontation at Nationals Park by simply not inviting the pro-choice politicians to a mass where there was no room for the vast majority of Catholics who wanted to attend.

In New York, Giuliani receiving Communion was even more remarkable. Unlike Pelosi and Kennedy, who are regular Mass attendees, the former mayor of New York says he goes to church only "occasionally," usually for holidays or funerals. Abortion aside, Giuliani's third marriage would make him ineligible for Communion because his second marriage was not annulled by the church. But New York's Cardinal Egan is not apt to offend the powerful, and Giuliani was invited to the Mass.

There are devout pro-life Catholics who oppose rejection of any worshiper at the Communion rail, but they believe bishops should publicly manifest disapproval of Catholic politicians who support abortion rights. The bishops of Washington and New York do not. (During Wuerl's installation mass as archbishop of Washington in 2006, he shook hands with Kerry and Kennedy, seated side by side.)

At Yankee Stadium, Benedict spoke of the "inalienable dignity and rights" of "the most defenseless of all human beings, the unborn child in the mother's womb." In parishes across the country, the faithful hear their priests echo the pope's words. Those professions ring hollow when pro-choice politicians are honored as they were during the pope's visit.

The Bishops have two sets of guidelines: one for the rich and powerful and one for the sheep they fleece to pay for their priest's and their own indiscretions.

Don't complain about this comment unless you want to discredit Our Lady of America's own warning about this same fault back in 1956.

The Bishops and Archbishops most certainly DID NOT do the right thing during the Pontiff's Masses. I was so turned off by Sen's Kerry and Pelosi receiving Holy Communion in this very public setting. No wonder so many Catholics are not practicing their faith. It's because the Bishops and Archbishops are not practicing their faith in the way they have been entrusted.

Rules only have meaning for those who willfully submit.

Well, for that matter then, every bishop is guilty but for a few....along with pastors. This is obvious because at every parish just about every pew is cleaned out for reception of the Eucharist. There is never a word re: proper reception/proper disposition of soul. And, in fact, this must also mean that any visiting Protestants or those not in communion with the Catholic Church are also receiving. The disobedient will have to face The Authority one day and explain why they disobeyed their earthly authority when admonished. But they first need to be reminded with seriousness. The big names are obvious, but condemning certain figures is not always correct either since we can never know all the facts such as the article below which has been available for some time:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,352950,00.html

NEW YORK β€” New York Cardinal Edward Egan says Rudy Giuliani should not have received Holy Communion during the pope's visit because he supports abortion rights.

Egan says he had "an understanding" with the former presidential candidate and New York mayor that he is not to receive the Eucharist. The Catholic Church teaches "that abortion is a grave offense against the will of God," Egan said.

The cardinal said Monday that Giuliani broke that understanding when he received the Eucharist during Pope Benedict XVI's visit earlier this month.

Egan says he will be seeking a meeting with Giuliani "to insist that he abide by our understanding."

I know Glenn Beck has been mentioned in a thread on this blog before. Here is a fascinating recent interview of Glenn's:

Sometimes I think the Bishops don't want to get their hands dirty with all of us little people. They are too busy doing their Jerry Maguire impersonations with all of their BIG friends in the Diocese saying "Show me The MONEY!!!"

I read the Glenn Beck transcript and it reminded me of a very candid conversation I had with Mr. young at Sylvan Springs some years ago when he was talking about what it was he felt he was told about future events. I wouldn't have thought twice about what he was saying had it not been for him telling SpiritDaily about terrorist attacks many months before 9/11 happened. Because he was so correct at that time, I was surprised at his candor when he was talking with me. He told me then that it would not really matter to tell everyone ahead of time because they would not make the tough choice to change their behaviors enough to change what would happen. Although I was frightened by what he said, he seemed oddly at peace with it.

I am beginning to understand why it is he seemed to be at peace. It was out of his hands and he wasn't looking for a fight over it.

If we don't pay attention to the signs and we choose to ignore what the bible has told us would happen because we feel intellectually superior since those words were given to us, we are the only ones to blame.

Hitler told the world what he planned to do in the 1930's and he did it.

Iran and the fanatics have said what they plan to do to Israel and the USA. We should believe them and take action.

Enough of that Michael Brown stuff! He's nothing but an alarmist selling books and tours.

You notice he doesn't have the fortitude to link ANYTHING about OLA anymore? What a sell-out artist.

I too have been disappointed in Michael Brown. He linked to Our Lady of America until the Fostoria and Indianapolis groups started bickering at the beginning of this year. I can understand that he was exasperated with those two groups, but he has always known about the Springs and could have linked to oltiv so more people would be aware of all the miraculous things happening here.
I pray for purity, protection of the U.S.A. and most importantly preservation of the holy ground at the Springs.

The Bishops certainly did not do themselves any favors by "conveniencing themselves" by letting these politicians disgrace the Blessed Sacrament in this way.

It's no wonder so many priests declare there is a lack of leadership coming from the Cathedrals around this country. The Bishops are trying to be "friends" rather than "shepherds".

This is shameful.
