What makes a quality confession?

We often hear from priests who lead retreats at this special place where Our Lady graced us with Her presence that "the quality of the confessions is so high when these people are here." Many times these priests will ask if it is just the nature of the people who are on these retreats or if it is due to some other influence upon these people during their visit that makes them immerse themselves more fervently into the sacrament of reconciliation. It is interesting that the priests would even consider the notion, but they are feeling "it" too. Perhaps it is a bit of both, but it sure seems like the gravity of the spiritual environment plays a very prominent role in placing people in the proper reflective spirit.

By Church law, Catholics are required to make a confession at least once a year. Others who are more inclined to the spiritual life, make confession much more frequently just as they might attend Mass more times throughout the week.

The quality of our confessions
Though many go to confession many times a year what is important is not so much the quantity of our confessions but the quality of our confessions. By this, it means that we are called to make good confessions.

A bad confession is done without the necessary preparation and without a contrite, humble, and penitent heart.

A good confession is done with the necessary examination of conscience and the qualities of heart and soul that are important to receive the grace of the sacrament.

Examination of conscience
Before going to confession, it is important to examine our souls. Most people usually hold their recent life experiences up against the ten commandments and the seven deadly sins: pride, lust, avarice, gluttony, anger, sloth, and envy. If any bells go off, they report them as necessary.

There is, however, another way of examining our conscience which focuses more on the status of the relationships in our lives. This takes a greater amount of introspection and individual discernment than just holding your own moral scorecard up to the answer sheet of the ten commandments and the seven deadly sins. It takes quiet time in the right setting. A place where Our Lady has prepared the environment especially for us to grow closer to Her Son.

When examining one's conscience this way, one should examine one's relationship with:
1) God
2) others
3) nature
4) our self

If we use these four parameters to examine how we fall short of Christ's teaching, then it will help us see where we have sinned.

Just as your doctor tries to create the proper setting and environment for your exam by having you abstain from food or medications before your procedures, so it is with putting yourself in the right setting and environment for a quality confession while on retreat at one of these pilgrimage spots.

You must be with God, with others, with nature, and alone with your self. Space is still available (see Retreat schedule).

In case it has been a while since your last confession

As you make your confession with the priest, this is what you will say:
"Bless me Father for I have sinned. My last confession was last ________.
Since my last confession I __(tell him what you have discerned)___... "

Keep it natural and conversational, but with all the qualities of heart and soul necessary to make it a good confession - humility, honesty, seeking mercy, penitent, sorrow for one's sins, etc...
a.. As you finish with your confession, wait for the priest to give some spiritual advice and encouragement and then bow your head for his absolution.
b.. Make sure you remember the penance the priest gives and perform it right after the confession lest you forget what the penance was. Many times we are so relieved of our tensions that we forget what we were told to do.
c.. After confession you should make the Act of Contrition.
This is the Act of Contrition:
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because I have offended You, my God, Who are all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace, to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life. Amen.

What a nice thoughtful article. It explains confession in a very natural and appealing way. I have not been to confession in a long time but I feel inspired to spend time today to prepare for going to confession tomorrow.

Thank you for this article and for providing this information on Our Lady of America.

I feel the Blessed Mother is bringing people together at places like this. Devotional places with natural areas to promote God's greatness in our hearts.

I can feel that there is a great urgency in Her heart. I pray that the Bishops put Her likeness in the National Shrine without any further delay.

To Larry and Family at Sylvan Springs-

Two years ago my husband and I stopped by to see "the Indiana Campus" where we met while attending The Way College of Biblical Studies. We wanted to show our two kids one of our favorite places. We were met at the door by Larry who gave us a quick tour of the changes that had been made to the buildings. It was gorgeous compared to how it was when we were there in the early 90's.

We got to talking about the Catholic church possibly buying it back and Larry said he didn't think it was very likely but that it would probably serve best from a lay-led perspective as it might be able to serve a wider array of people without turning non-Catholics off. We were obviously non-Catholic and had been taught that Catholics were evil and against God's plan. We also did not believe that Jesus was the Son of God.

When we told larry of our beliefs, he didn't argue any points we made but he sat quietly thinking for a moment and excused himself. When he came back, he gave us two books and a handful of medals for all of us. We pretty much dismissed the notion at first and put them away as curious artifacts of a belief system we had no desire to investigate any further because we already knew our faith.

Before we left, Larry said something that struck my husband very deep in his heart. He told him that he sensed my husband was worried about something and that he should take us into the little chapel and ask God for what it is we needed, not wanted. He said my husband needed to be the spiritual lion of his family and lead us as a gentle and loving king. I had always been the lead in our spiritual faith but Larry said we needed to change that role for the sake of the kids. We did as he suggested and my husband prayed for us to know the truth.

On the way home, I began looking at the books Larry gave us. One was a book of messages from Our Lady of America and the other was Home Sweet Rome by Scott Hahn. He had also given us 5 medals. One for each of us and one extra for someone he said would end up being our spiritual director.

I began reading through the messages while we were driving and at first it seemed a bit goofy to us. Then I read the parts about the children leading by the purity of their lives. This made sense to us both.

Well, we read the books, even though we didn't understand much of Our Lady of America. We did relate very well to the Home Sweet Rome book though. That one clicked.

We ended up sharing our story with a Catholic colleague from work and she suggested we go to a parish function with them see if it appealed to us. We had a good time and met a young priest who sat through much of the night listening to our story and was fascinated. He suggested we meet for breakfast sometime and talk some more.

We began to talk with Father John on a social basis. We had a lot to reconcile in our faith but he was very patient with us and gave us solid answers to our questions that had never been really answered before. We got the truth we needed.

In a little over two weeks, our whole family will be baptized and receive our first communion together. We have never been happier. The whole last year has been the most exceptional journey we may ever take as a family. My husband and I have grown to understand the Catholic faith and the wonder of the Tri-une God. Jesus is our Savior and the Virgin Mary is our intercessor. The community has been absolutely wonderful.

We gave Father John the extra medal of Our Lady of America and we all wear ours with great pride. We think the sense of holiness we felt while attending college was Our Lady's presence the whole time. It has always been a place where we felt safe and loved and now we know the truth. Our Lady of America was always there even though our group's beliefs shunned her. She loved us in spite of our own arrogance and ignorance.

We cannot thank you enough for all your hard work in keeping the place up. We had hundreds of people and you are doing it with just a few people. I don't think people realize just how much work it is. Please know that you made all the difference in our lives and we can never repay you your kindness and sensitivity to our needs even though we were dismissive at first.

I know this is long but I really needed to share this with you all. It has taken me two days to write it to make it this brief.

We are so happy knowing the truth and are excited for our children to have this knowledge before they get too old. Eventually we hope to have a Catholic wedding so we can receive as many sacraments as possible. We will all be thinking of you on our special day and we hope to see you again soon. Please take care of Our Lady of America's house.

Thank you for a wonderful article on quality confessions. I had not been to confession in a long time, but I was inspired to make a holy hour yesterday and have my confession heard. These instructions were very helpful in guiding me to one of the more moving reconciliations in my life.

I feel so much more alive today since my experience. I'm still not ready for the face to face though.

This item was posted on ZENIT NEWS yesterday and is pertinent to this discussion. How Timely!

According to the president of Indian bishops' conference, shrines are visible signs of God's loving power.

Cardinal Telesphore Toppo, archbishop of Ranchi, highlighted the importance of shrines at the International Consultation on Shrines and Pilgrimages held last week in Bangalore.

"The spirit of God is present when believers make their hearts ready for him and go to sacred places precisely with this readiness," said Cardinal Toppo.

He pointed out that sacred places are recognized by all religious cultures and that they answer a need in people's hearts: contact with God.

Cardinal Toppo added: "We find [shrines] in the history of Christianity, right from the beginning; we have the sacred places where Jesus lived.

"In fact, Jesus himself went several times to Jerusalem to celebrate the great Jewish feasts. … Jesus' life is portrayed as a journey to Jerusalem, a pilgrimage."

"Christians, when they visit these places experience immense joy and … feel the presence of Jesus," the cardinal continued. "The shrines and pilgrimage places … are there so that we may be filled by his Spirit, hear the Word of God, and come to know Jesus … more intimately and love him more ardently."

What a powerful testimony from Ben and Ann.

I have heard many stories over the years of ex-Way members coming back to Rome City and making a fuss when they are not allowed full access to the facility any longer. Many times they are not so nice because they feel it still belongs to them. They sold it and Larry and his wife took a huge leap of faith and rescued it. I applaud Larry for his patience with these folks and for looking through the negative to focus on the positive. I have heard him speak to prayer groups before about loving the souls of those around us even though we do not necessarily like the person. This must have been a perfect example of that when the couple from Buffalo showed up. I know I would not have been as patient with someone coming to my house and blasting Catholics. I guess that is why Our Lady chose him and not me. I would have thrown them out and this wonderful change in these peoples lives would have never happened.

Hip-Hip Hooray! for Ben and Ann and their children. Three cheers for Our Lady of America and Her special gifts for us children.

Please pray for our Bishop John D'Arcy, who loves Our Lady dearly, that he will vote to approve Our Lady of America.

I was very moved by this article on confessions. I had never considered my relationships to be sinful or un-Christlike. I see how the deeper introspection is yielding quality confessions.

I am also very happy for Ben and Anne and the children. I bet Larry has many stories to tell of other people like this. I am sure it makes him feel good to hear back from these people.

I am so glad this site is here because the Fostoria group hasn't had anything new on their site in almost two months. What's going on? Is there a "secret"?

I have really learned a lot here and it has helped me pass the news on to other people at my church.

That's great news from the family getting baptized together. How cool is that?

You don't know what the Fostoria group is doing quietly and patiently behind the scenes. Not everything needs to be so openly displayed at this point. You need to be patient.

This is good news about the family in Buffalo. Prayers are being answered.

I don't think I agree very much with the last anonymous comment. I think we should all be as knowledgeable as the next as where we are at in this movement. There should be more open information.

I think it just means there is nothing new and they are waiting for the June meetings. I would ask if anyone gets wind of any marches or special masses where there will be special homilies to let us know through this blog site. They never post anything about them on the official site and you end up hearing about them a month after it happens. Frustrating when you are trying to be a part of it and you feel excluded because of lack of notice of these events.

THE WORLD WILL SOON WITNESS A CATACLYSMIC EVENT

A GRAY CLOUD WILL COVER THE LAND SHORE TO SHORE

BECAUSE MANKIND CHOSE SATAN AND NOT GOD TO ADORE.

IF YOU THINK THAT YOUR BURDENS ARE UNBEARABLE NOW,

YOU WILL ONCE AGAIN ASK WHY GOD THIS DID ALLOW.

THERE WILL BE NO PLACE LEFT TO RUN OR TO HIDE

EXCEPT FOR THE REFUGES WHICH GOD WILL PROVIDE.

GOD HAS ALREADY EVERY REFUGE PREPARED,

AND THOSE WHO ARE CALLED THERE FROM ALL HARM WILL BE SPARED.

EACH REFUGE GOD CHOSE AND HELPED TO COMPLETE

WILL BE SHIELDED BY GOD’S HAND UNTIL SATAN DOES RETREAT.

WHEN THE TURMOIL SUBSIDES AND THE SKIES AGAIN CLEAR,

EVERY REFUGE WILL SEE A BRIGHT RAINBOW APPEAR.

THOUGH THE ENEMY’S TRYING WHAT GOD PLANS TO DERAIL,

IN THE END GOD WILL TRIUMPH AND SATAN WILL FAIL.

I love this site/blog very much. I love to hear the witnesses who are the true fruit of our dear Mother's love touching their hearts, and often, it is said, through the patient care of those attached to this beautiful place. But ... it is sad to read the beginnings of comparison or criticisms of another site so very important to the real education of the bishops. I know that Our Lady would be saddened if there begins to be any disunity within the cause due to personal ideas of just how Her mission proceeds. I think the difference lies in the unique mission that each part of the body of this Marian cause has. Below there is the statement of just what the purpose of the Fostoria Center has been and continues to be.

"In October 13, 1956, The Blessed Virgin Mary requested that a statue of "Our Lady of America" be enshrined in the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., as a special place of pilgrimage and a special safeguard for our Country. Our Lady promised miracles greater than those of Lourdes and Fatima if her children heeded her warnings and fulfilled her requests. She indicated that this would be accomplished through her loyal sons, the Bishops of the United States. It is to the fulfillment of these requests that this website is dedicated and it is to Our Lady of America that it is consecrated."

Thus, one can see that only those processions/enthronements that have been carried out in the manner fitting this particular element of persuasion of the bishops can be carried in their particular venue. Otherwise, any speculation of future events that may or may not be carried out would perhaps not further this movement, as far as the bishops are concerned at this time.

"Strong warnings were repeated by Our Lady throughout 1957 and 1958, and there after, indicating that the hour grows late and Sister must tell the Bishops of the United States of Our Lady's desires and how she wishes them to be carried out."

As we see this has and is taking place by the very fact of what happened at the last gathering of the bishops through the now convinced good bishops along with reps from Fostoria. I don't think therefore that we should confuse the different missions.

I have known about this cause for years now and as much as I have been able I have tried to spread the history, and messages of OLOA, attempting to educate people in the most important instructions of our Mother. I learned of these way back when Michael Brown reported through his articles on what he had received through Fostoria reps and I went from there. I learned that Sr. Joseph just doesn't have the means nor does she feel it is possible for her to go any further than her sister, Sr. Millie, asked to first have accomplished - to keep the message itself pure for the sake of getting it to the bishops.

That is all I can say in defense of all of the different paths that the Spirit is seeming to be moving in this cause. More will be accomplished through prayer and sacrifice ... and that is in the messages ... for America's future to carry out OLOA's hopes ... or else (as She warns). As in the messages themselves, that has to come first ... even before our own consolations. No one should rest or criticize while much is taking place. It only harms the work and sacrifice that has taken place so far. We mustn't be tempted to put the horse before the cart!! If and when other priests or bishops are convinced through our own prayers and actions ... and institute their own enthronements, processions, that news, I'm sure will be put forth to see.

God bless all those who sacrifice in any way for our Lady's most urgent cause of more good than evil to be done which will be the only way for the promised blessings to come to fruition ... for Everyone. All in God's time and His holy will.

I tried using some of the HTML "tags" but don't know just what will appear here!!

Well said, again, Kris although I can certainly empathize with those who may be showing signs of frustration in the contemporaneous flow of information surrounding this magnificent cause coming out of the Fostoria reps. I think newly devoted (and us old-timers) people just want to be as pro-active as possible and when they feel leadership is not channeling info that allows them to adequately plan to participate in these events, which obviously took pre-planning by the Fostoria reps, they feel a natural sense of dis-connect and I think that is what we are sensing here. Everyone knows that when a website does not add new content on a regular basis, viewers stop checking in. When you find out about something after it happened, you feel like you may have missed out on something. In this case, some may feel they are being excluded (albeit unintended).

Thank heavens for this blog site so we can help to continue the rally of our Lady's quest.

Please do not give up the efforts of spreading the news to all you can. tell people about this site and the ourladyofamerica.com site to help foster the growth. Try to stay positive.

That last comment from jmj.org was pretty spooky though. Can I get a permanent reservation in Rome City for my family this summer?

At March 26, 2007 2:21 PM , Anonymous VAlerie said...

I can sense the frustration in some of the comments too. However, if there is nothing new to report from Fostoria, then there is nothing new to report. In the future, it would be nice to have some updates and adequate advance notice on organized Masses and marches as there was on Jan 15 in D.C. I was in town for the march but had no idea of the Mass with the OLOA homily beforehand. I would have loved to attend with my group had we known. I feel like I missed some history there.

We are young and we are learning. It is good to have this particular venue to share these thoughts and grow together as a community in support of each other.

WHAT A WONDERFUL CONVERSION FOR THE FAMILY FROM BUFFALO, NY!

THIS is what it is all about. I am convinced the apparition site in Rome City is Holy Ground and will be a place of continued blessing and miracles. May God bless this family and the Fostoria reps and help them through their hard work on behalf of Our Lady.

I am a stay-at-home mom who has two kids in a home schooling program with my neighbor. The kids had been following this blog and we promised that when it got warmer we would load up a van for a daytrip and it has been just wonderful.

We packed a little lunch and had a picnic on the Holy Family Hill after we prayed a rosary for the sake of Our Lady of America and this wonderful facility.

The kids brought their laptop and we are using the WiFi internet from the parking lot. Very good signal.

We would very much like to come back for a group event.

What a blessing this family from Buffalo has received from Our Lady of America through the intercession of the discerning owner and the young priest who guided them to the truth. Imagine the outcome if Larry had booted them out for being disrespectful at first!

I feel this is a sign of our times and that we need to be aware of the perils of our own neglect of what it is Our Lord has asked of us.

Through places like this, many conversions will be the lasting fruit. We must do whatever we can to help Our Lady. I feel time is running short and we must focus our attention on prayer and reconciliation and the eucharist.

My wife and I drove over to Rome City with two old friends yesterday who are retired priests. Since they no longer drive long distances, they had been after me to make the drive.

We had a wonderful little surprise in meeting the owner Larry. He put down his yard tools and took us inside for a tour so we could see the beautiful church where the apparitions of Our Lady of America firts happened. We were almost beside ourselves. We had been following the messages for nearly ten years and had never known about this place being still around until our niece sent us this information on this website.

Larry suggested we make our way to the hill where the statue of the holy family is. The sun was out and it was spinning. None of us had ever seen anything like it. Our friends were very emotional as was I. Call us crazy but we saw what we saw.

Thanks to Larry for showing us around. You definitely have your hands full and we will be praying for you. We made a special intention at Mass this morning for all the work there.

I feel a great storm is brewing and this will be a haven of sorts for the faithful.

I had read the poem on this site a few days ago and maybe that had something to do with my senses, but I usually do not dwell on things like this.

I ask that everyone reading this stop and pray an Our Father, a Hail Mary, and a Glory Be for Our Lady of America and the safety and success of this very special treasure chosen for us by Our Lady.

Dear Anonymous,

I pray all said the prayers you requested when they read your comment. God bless you for sharing this.

Our Lady of America has asked recently for more prayers; especially more rosaries daily for our protection until Her Bishops respond to Her call. That message was given to this site earlier.

She has also asked to "Gather Together Her Bishops." That also was a message received from Her. She needs Her Bishops to respond and is asking us to help!

I am so happy others are getting the messages in their own personal way also. It shows how Our Lady is preparing us and trying to help us through prayer and also through contacting the Bishops so they will finally answer Her call that She made to Her True Visonary: Sister Mary Ephram in 1956!

God bless us all,
From Our Lady of America. the Immaculate Virgin

Actually, the water from Lourdes is much more likely to be contaminated than the water from Rome City. The sewer systems around Lourdes are really not up to date and the area around the Rome City site is pretty undeveloped and pristine.

Fatima just has bad plastic statues. As everybody knows, those can be very toxic if ingested.

I get so intimidated by some of these other sites, even some of the homilies previously given by the priests on OLOA, by some of the language. I guess if I had read more on all these topics I'd be better able to follow along, but this is how we grow in our understanding.

I just wish some of these discussions going on these days on so many websites regarding our faith and practice would lighten up a little bit. It's no wonder so many people outside the Church think Catholics are zealots who cannot be reasoned with. It seems we are the only ones who are safe to attack in the press.

We need to be more approachable. I think that is why Larry was so effective with the ex-Way people who will be baptized this week as a family. He just put the information in their hands and let them come to their own conclusions as to what the truth is. He set a good example and they followed the path. Good job! We should all learn something from this.

Please keep praying for Our Lady of America and the Bishops' response to our pleas. Pray also for all those involved in this HUGE effort at all levels.

VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI, in his Palm Sunday Mass, opened the Roman Catholic Church's most solemn week by urging young people to live pure, innocent lives.

Benedict continued the tradition started by John Paul and dedicated Palm Sunday to the young, who were out in force in St. Peter's.

He told them that to follow God they should have "innocent hands and pure hearts."

"Innocent hands are hands that are not used for acts of violence," he told them. "They are hands that are not sullied by corruption and bribes."

Hearts are pure when they are not "stained by lies and hypocrisy," he said. "A heart is pure when it is estranged from the intoxication of pleasure; a heart for whom love is true and not just the passion of a moment," he said.

GEE! WHERE HAVE I HEARD THAT BEFORE?
